Schedule
What you will notice about this schedule is that the sessions are quite similar throughout the semester. This is done purposefully so that students will know what to expect and be aware of deadlines. Time is very important in this course, as you will soon discover. As such, I have designed the syllabus to accommodate as much studio time during class sessions as is possible.
‘Project Work’ in the schedule below refers to the semester-long project that you will develop through this course. You are responsible to choose the topic/issue and decide how you will make art that refers to/reacts to/connects with it. I will address this thoroughly and hold conferences with each student to ensure that the design and expectations of the course are clearly understood. *All classes in November are given over to concentrated studio time in preparation for the final.
‘Sketchbook review’ is weekly, and is the core of the weekly conferences with students. This is an opportunity for me to assess your progress, offer suggestions for progress, and identify references that could be valuable to your project.
In the ‘Subject’ column, there are different movements and issues that we will examine weekly, in order to give you a thorough grounding in process and development in painting.
Subject – In the subject column, there are artists listed under movements and/or issues dealt with in their paintings. This is not an exhaustive list, we will cover more artists during classes but they are a start for your research. *Important* – We are not studying art history. Through October we will proceed roughly chronologically to give you a foundation for our main aim, which is to articulate and visualize the interconnectivity of the practice of painting over the past 150 years. AFTER that, we will look at painting through the issues that painters bring to it.
