Schedule SP26

As our class meets twice per week, we will separate the required academic and creative work into distinct class sessions. Please recall the description of the course in the overview and info sections of this syllabus. In the ‘Description’ column of the schedule below you will find the following terms:

Reading Discussion: Apart from the last 3 weeks of the semester, homework includes reading. The content of the reading is indicated in the subject column. An exercise, task, or question accompanies the readings. The reading and associated assignments are used in the reading discussion. The reading discussion is a very important part of your learning in this course and is included in the grading rubric for the course. Reading discussion material begins with an overview of painting from late 1800’s through to contemporary.

Sketchbook/Research review. Every week you are expected to do project prep homework in your sketchbook – including both creative work and the results of your research. All art-making projects include research of some kind – and so will yours. Every week, I will review your book with you to track your progress and offer help and connections.

Subject Area. This course will follow a roughly chronological path through some examples of art and artists’ processes to help students understand the interconnectedness of art practice via the images and objects artists have been making for over 1000 years. The subject area readings are the topic of discussion in the following class. For. example, Mon 26th’s homework will be about the development of modernism and will be responded to in homework and discussed in the Analysis following class session. This course gives. you the Artistic Analysis designation. Attendance at these sessions is as essential as Practice for students and must be reflected on the rubric in order to justify the designation for the college.

Project Work. Project work begins in March. We will discuss projects thoroughly at that time, you will be given a description. Every week during the projects phase, a whole class session is reserved for you to work creatively on your project. The best way to use this time is by preparing for classes by setting a goal(s) for every class session. I am present to help all of you with every aspect of your projects. There are no entries in this column until the Class exercises section of the course is completed.

Creative Research. Students must conduct research throughout this course, it is most likely to be done in your sketchbook, or using some other form of recording than your finalized works. It is intrinsic to the success of any artwork that the artist knows what they were aiming at making, and why. There is a lot of nuance contained in this category of your work this semester. Rather than write out a long description that few will read, we will discuss this item in some detail during the first class session.
